interview with Morgan Brice (also Gail Z Martin)

Q: Tell us a little about yourself.

A: As Morgan Brice I write urban fantasy MM paranormal romance, and as Gail Z. Martin I write epic fantasy, urban fantasy, steampunk and more. I’m married with three grown children, plus two very spoiled dogs.

Q: How do you relax?

A: I love to read (something I don’t have to proofread), or my husband and I watch Netflix, and in other years, I loved to travel.

Q: How long have you been writing and what made you fall in love with writing?

A: I fell in love with writing because I’ve always loved books. I’ve been writing all my life, but I’ve been published (as Gail) since 2007 and (as Morgan) since 2018.

Q: Did you always want to be a writer?

A: Pretty much. I decided when was 14 that I wanted to write books when I grew up. I got there—but it took longer than I expected!

Q: What are your ambitions for your writing career?

A: I want to tell stories that amuse people and help them escape from their troubles, and I want to make a living doing it so I don’t have to have a ‘normal’ job again.

Q: What’s your favorite part of writing?

A: I like everything except editing/proofreading! I love coming up with the plot/character/setting, thinking about where the series goes, doing the research, and doing the actual writing. I just get antsy in the multiple edits loop, but it’s a vital piece of the process.

Q: Why did you choose to write GLBTQ romance/fiction?

A: I started reading MM romance and absolutely fell in love with the genre, and decided it was too much fun not to be writing as well as reading.

Q: Do you write any other genre?

A: As Gail Z. Martin I write epic fantasy, urban fantasy, steampunk and more. Those books are probably 98% action/adventure and 2% romance with no on-page sex and a variety of MM and MF relationships.

Q: Give the readers a brief summary of your latest book or WIP.

A: Huntsman is the first book in my Fox Hollow Zodiac series, with Liam, a fox shifter who is running away from a supernatural hitman and Russ, a wolf shifter who is trying to move on after his husband’s death. As it turns out, Liam and Russ are fated mates, and they’ve got to thwart the hitman to save Liam and other kidnapped shifters.

Q: What genre does it fall in?

A: Paranormal romance, shifter romance (not MPREG and not A/B/O).

Q: Share a few words about your latest book/WIP, other than the usual blurb.

A: I’m currently working on a short story, Romp, which will be part of a multi-author Prolific Works giveaway in September. It’s a friends-to-lovers story starring a lonely otter shifter, and it’s set in the Fox Hollow world.

Q: Give us a little insight into your main characters. Who are they?

A: Liam is a librarian and a fox shifter who just wants a quiet life and the love of a good man. His ex-boyfriend betrayed him and then hired someone to kill him. Liam escapes, and a friend offers him a new job in a town he’s never been to, but he’s desperate and so he goes. Russ is an auto mechanic and volunteer firefighter. He’s a wolf shifter, and he’s still grieving his husband, who died in a car wreck. He’s a good guy who has a ‘found family’ of friends, but he’s lonely even though he doesn’t think he’s ready to find love again.

Q: Will we be seeing these characters again any time soon? Is this book part of a series?

A: The book is part of a series and we will definitely see Russ and Liam again as background characters in other books!

Q: What does your writing process look like?

A: I usually write an overview and an outline. The overview is me getting the basics of the story down, as if I were giving a summary. Then I chunk that into segments, looking for where the chapters should fall, and make sure the story is flowing right. Then I write!

Q: When/where is your favorite time/place to write?

A: My favorite place to write is with a view of the ocean! (That’s special, and only on vacation.) I write all day—I do this full-time—so every time is a good time to write!

Q: What genre/s do you enjoy reading in your free time?

A: Lately I’ve been reading paranormal MM romance, paranormal mystery, and urban fantasy.

Q: What hobbies do you have outside of writing?

A: I’m a huge fan of the TV show Supernatural, and I also love to cook and read for fun. And in normal years, I love to travel.

Flashing lights broke Liam out of his gloomy thoughts. The tow truck headed toward him, then did a U-turn and pulled in front of Liam’s car, backing up until it was close enough to hook up the Honda.

The truck driver got out and walked toward Liam, who reluctantly got out of the car. Even though he had called for assistance and it was clear the stranger was a legitimate responder, Liam couldn’t help feeling jittery, with his hands sweating, and heart thumping.

Those reactions doubled when he got a good look at the driver.

Oh, just shoot me now. Fuck my life. Why did he have to be so fine?

In the glare of the truck’s spotlights, Liam made out all the important details. The man had broad shoulders, strong arms, powerful legs, and a solid chest, standing a good five inches or more over Liam’s five-foot-seven frame. Liam had thought he might be saved if the driver was ugly as sin, but he was out of luck. His face was as utterly lickable as the rest of him.

“You called for a tow? Mr. Reynard?”

Liam nodded.

“I’m Russell Lowe—everyone calls me Russ. I own Lowe’s Auto Shop in Fox Hollow, and tonight I’m your personal tow truck driver,” he said with a broad smile and dimples. The man’s sharp cheekbones, full lips, and strong chin were highlighted by dark brown scruff. Liam’s gaze traveled upward, surprised at gray hair flecked with brown framing a face that couldn’t be older than thirty-five. Green eyes made Liam wonder what kind of shifter Russ might be.

He swallowed hard and might have blushed when he realized Russ seemed to be checking him out too. No matter how attractive his roadside savior might be, Liam’d had enough man trouble to last an eternity, and he sure didn’t need more in a new town.

“Yes, I’m Liam Reynard. Just Liam,” he said, wishing he could conjure up the natural charm that had always served him well in community theater performances. His fox could be quite dramatic. But now, on the run, scared for his life, and in the dark with a stranger in the middle of nowhere, he couldn’t muster his usual flair.

“The engine started making strange noises, and I pulled off. I didn’t want to break anything.” Liam cringed because heknew next to nothing about cars. Admitting that takes points off my “man score,” doesn’t it? Then again, so does being a sports-hating, gay fox shifter twink.

Well, at thirty, I’d thought my twink days were behind me. But when he compared his own shorter, lithe, dancer build to the solid man-mountain in front of him? Yeah, twink still fits.

“I’m glad you stopped the car without waiting for the car to stop you.” Russ finally shifted his attention away from Liam and focused on the Civic. “Let’s get the tow set up, and then you can ride in the cab with me to Fox Hollow.”
